Statement - Conclusions
Introduction : Conclusion is the last main division of discourse, usually containing a summing up of the points and a statement of opinions or decisions reached.
'Conclusion' is a fact that can be truly inferred from the contents of a given sentence. This type of questions consist of a statement or a set of statements, followed by certain inference(s) based on the facts of statements. Here, candidates are required to approach the questions with solutions from different angles. This approach basically emphasises the need for being more systematic and logical in drawing inferences. Therefore, consequent effect of a statement has to be analysed before reaching the correct conclusion(s).
The following points should be taken into consideration while solving question based on statement and conclusions.
This topic mainly deals with the conditions of which the conclusion has to be reached.
Two Conclusions : In this type of questions, one statement and two conclusions are given. We have to analyse that which conclusion(s) appropriately support the sentence.
Example 1:
Statement : These apples are good but too expensive to bought.
Conclusion :
(a) Only I follows (b) Only II follows (c) Both follow (d) None follows
Solution : (b) According to the statement, quality is directly proportional to the price. Hence, higher the selling price, superior is the quality of the commodity.
Example 2 :
Statement : In a one-day cricket match the total runs made by a team were 200, out of which 160 runs were made by spinners.
Conclusions :
(a) Only I follows (b) Only II follows (c) Both follow (d) None follows
Solution : (d) Team may consists of the number of spinners more or less than given in Conclusion I. Therefore, Conclusion I does not follow. Secondly, it is not known from the statement that opening batsmen were spinners. Therefore, Conclusion II does not follow.
Directions : In the following problem, a statement is given followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. Without resolving anything yourself, choose the conclusion which logical follows from the given statement. Statement : Sealed tenders are invited from competent contractors experienced experienced in executing construction jobs. Conclusions : I. Tenders are invited only from experienced contractors. II. It is difficult to find competent tenderer in construction jobs. | |||
